It is not necessary, for mangas and anime to begin cutting certain aspects that may be deemed too cruel or controversial fro their content would inplicate that the manga publishers have capitulated to popular demand. Most manga are drafted by one man(as you said they are most likely "in the same boat as us", they are not adhereing to many western standards), manga creation has always been a male intensive vocation.
