The marind people in New Guinea, Indonesia had an old religion, which probably also existed in different places in the world.
The religion
Everyone is a descendant of the Mother Goddess, everyone is equal. It doesn't matter if a kid is your son or someone else's son, they're all the children of the Mother Goddess and therefore you have the responsibility to protect the children. There is no concept of the individual, there is only the community. They didn't undertand genes, they had a different theory, the woman gives the life and the man gives the energy.
Since the man gives the energy, it was believed that, the more men a woman has sex with, the more energy there will be. They believed that semen contains energy, so they needed a lot of semen. When a woman married, the members of the husband's family would come and have sex with her to give as much energy as possible. This would take place on the day of the girl's wedding, she would have sex with her husband's family members first and the husband would be the last. The quota was 10 family members per day, so if the husband had more, they would continue the next day. This ritualistic sex would take place during other times as well, such as after the woman has given birth.
