Toponymy is now our thing :feelscomfy:

My main argument was that cities, states and countries should follow a simple and expected naming convention whose purpose should be to make things as easy to understand as possible, and my main example was the country of Panama.

The capital of Panama is Panama City, located in the Panama Province, in the Panama District. Everything here makes sense, there is no room for confusion :feelsokman:

My main argument against having random historical names was the British Columbia province, which is actually Canadian: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Columbia

@DarkStar 's main argument was that it is important to keep the historical names because they reveal the rich interesting history behind each of these names, and this has more value than having a sterile and meaningless naming convention.

More will be discussed when DarkStar gets unbanned :feelsokman:

IQ mogs me :feelsokman:

I know absolutely nothing about geography.

Welcome to the toponymy thread, @Grodd :feelsYall:

Special shoutout to you for explaining England, United Kingdome, Great Britain :feelscomfy:

So basically, it's the jews once again.

explaining England, United Kingdome, Great Britain
Unfortunately, there is another type of England called New England :feelsUgh:

New England IS IN THE UNITED STATES! :feelsree:

alot of those 'weird names' used to make perfect sense in the past or have meaning behind them
Take Antarctica for example, which literally means 'opposite to the bear' in greek (anti = opposite, arktos = bear) since the bear constellation (ursa major) is to the north
Or the holy roman empire, which is neither holy nor roman nor an empire but they called themselves that because that's how they saw themselves

How about being for historical placenames in your country, and maybe neighbouring or culturally close countries, and simplified names for the rest:feelshmm:.

it's more like Chinese Columbia
Dark Star once wrote the explanation behind British Columbia, but it was in a group chat which doesn't have a search function unfortunately, I have to paraphrase it

Is @DarkStar back yet

Hong Kong was apart of England at one point, there are two Samoas there is American Samoa, which is territory that belong to the USA and there’s Samoa which is its own country.

Also, the capital of Wyoming is Cheyenne and the capital of North Dakota is Fargo.

Man I used to like geography a lot, a shame that my fat fucking geography teacher ruined my interests in geography.

Yes, this is another dilemma, Constantinople/Istanbul :feelsokman:

But there is a manea song where they call it Istanbul, so I am leading towards that

I am sure @sk.feelsdevil will agree :feelsokman:

This will good for Europeans for the US. Just have the US states be called State 1, State 2, State 3 etc.

Recently I was talking to DarkStar on the Discord about US states and we were talking about the state of Virginia. The problem is there is also a state West Virginia.

But there is no East, South, North Virginia.

There is North Carolina and South Carolina, as well as North Dakota and South Dakota, but no West Carolina / West Dakota or East Carolina / East Dakota :feelsUgh:

Also, there are New Jersey, New Hampshire and New York states, but no Old Jersey, Old Hampshire or Old York states :reeeeee:

Atleast you have an interest in geography, my teachers completely ruined my interests in history and geography.:cryfeels:
Don't worry about it, my interest in geography stems from the Fallout game franchise :feelsokman:

Not going to lie, I’ve been slightly getting back into history because of the anime, Girls Und Panzer, lol. Really good show if you like history or tanks but I wouldn’t take the physics too seriously since the combat in that anime is pretty dumb and not realistic, but nevertheless I still enjoyed it.

The same thing happened when I played battlefield 1 for the first time when it had came out, I was like 10? And from that point on until I was 13-14 I used to like geography and history a lot. I also was very big into politics as well, I used to be a hard republican too. Nowadays, as I got more older, I’m just apathetic to the point that I only care about playing old PlayStation games and watching movies. But occasionally I’m slightly going back into anime.

School killed a lot of interests for me, unfortunately. Notably reading, I never read a book in my life, I came to hate reading because of the boring useless garbage they forced us to read in school
