This manga is an adaptation of a Japanese novel originally written by Osamu Dazai. It is semi-autobiographical, so it mixes certain experiences from the author's life with a fictional part. It tackles various themes, focusing on depression, a sense of alienation, and suicide. As the story progresses, we follow Dazai's decline to the point where he completely loses his humanity, becoming an empty shell devoid of all feeling. His perpetual questioning of his existence, his place in the world and his quest for fulfillment in a pre-World War II world. But that's not the subject of my thread here.
I came across a couple of pannels that evoked certain similarities in the real world: a young teenager who had the misfortune to be born with defective genes is mocked and torn apart by his peers. But there's only one student who shows him a grain of sympathy, and that's Dazai. But as the story progresses, we learn that this was only on the surface, and that this young man has once again been deceived. Worst of all, he learns of it in the worst possible way, naively believing what Dazai told him , that a foid likes him etc... which leads him to an unfortunate fate...
