He has a point, but I think he is missing the bigger picture. I don't think the way women act is because of the media saying that girls should be attracted to male models, but rather because of the complete lack of masculinity in the media in the past 20 years.
Millennial girls were constantly told that they can get whatever they want without changing anything about themselves. When I was a kid there were a lot of TV shows out there that catered specifically to boys (Dragon Ball Z, ninja turtles, biker mice from mars, etc). Now when I google "Kids shows for boys" I get fucking nothing. Every single thing is gender neutral. Actually know what I found?
This bullshit
Whether they're science guys or adventurers, boys can choose from a lot of great TV shows with strong male characters in leadership roles. But for a show to be truly great for boys, it also needs to avoid
stereotypes -- of both boys and girls -- and
offer up a world that's made of male and female characters. That's why we've compiled this list of entertaining shows with awesome role models for boys. With so many iffy messages out there about
body image,
sexuality, and
role models, boys (
and girls) can benefit from talking about how men are portrayed in the media, and these shows can help start the discussion.
Basically what they are saying is that we need to make sure that boys aren't taught about masculinity but show them that boys can be in charge. What the fuck, man?
Girls, on the other hand little girls have a fuck ton of shows directly targeted towards their gender. Off the top of my head I can remember Hannah Montana, Totally Spies!, Lizzie McGuire, Kim Possible, the list goes on... In all these shows they openly talked about feminine stuff such as how to talk to Chad, body image, and all that other gay shit that me, as a male couldn't give a fuck about. The men that these girls drool over in these TV shows aren't liked because of their P E R S O N A L I T Y. No, it is because they are a hot Chad and these shows don't even try to hide it. Girls learn that they should only go for a man because of his looks and not based off other merits. In the past, where it was okay to be masculine girls learned to swoon over guys because of what they do and not so much how they look. The media embraces femininity and shuns masculinity. What is the result? You get a lot of girls feeling like they are owed the world and men who either act like women (soyboys) or are too afraid to speak to women because the media has taught them that is undesirable behavior.
Now this is where Lookism comes in. Since millennials were taught to hide their masculinity, they end up thinking of things as a woman would. I am not getting laid? It must be my looks! Which is true, but this would not have been true in the past since females weren't as entitled to getting Chad and only Chad.
This is only going to get worse in the future. The boy scouts is accepting girls in it, for fucks sake. Kids will no longer learn how to be men.
