he was a vietnam vet suffering from severe ptsd after seeing the zombies munch on his granddaughter.
he had a bit of freddy kruger looking design, an interesting boss fight and a kick ass theme when you fight him.

and in the cutscene when you meet him, he's obviously a vietnam vet.
which is fine and all, having real life events and characters effected by those events make the story more believable and realistic.
