There are simply more men than women, especially between the age 16 and 35. Even if you give each male a single female, there will be still way too many single men left. The most notorious example would be China with extra 70 million men. Don't forget that 16-25 females are chased by 16-55 year old men which makes things even harder to form pairs that are of same age, females tend to choose oldier men in their 30s who are more succesful and experienced. Being a female is a very precious thing these days, that's why they are picky as fuck and have orbiters.

Gender ratios can be misleading. Females tend to outlive males, so it's natural for there to be an excess of females in a population but in reality those extra females are all grannymaxxed.

Another problem is that economic migrants tend to relocate to wealthier areas after already getting married. This causes situations where the gender ratio appears to be only *slightly* imbalanced, but in reality almost all of the females are already locked into monogamy.

However, hypergamy is probably still a bigger factor than gender ratio imbalances.
