The ‘Manosphere’ Is the Modern-Day Frankenstein’s Monster
Tech platforms, patriarchal norms, and right-wing populists stitched together the most dangerous force of the online world
In the UK, a survey of over 2,100 men and women aged 18–48 (with men oversampled 70–30 for deeper analysis) revealed the following:
68% of men agreed that ‘men can have their reputations destroyed just for speaking their mind these days.’
63% felt angry that ‘unqualified people get promoted just because of diversity.’
59% agreed that ‘feminism is about favouring women over men.’
57% believed that ‘women only seek out men who either have a lot of money or a really good job.’
54% agreed that ‘things are generally better when men bring in money and women take care of the home and/or kids.’
First and foremost, misogynist radicalisation fuels violence against women and girls. It normalises everyday sexism — inappropriate behaviour, harassment, discrimination, etc. — perpetuates the endless recycling of patriarchal myths, and creates conditions for far more extreme manifestations. Teachers now report that even boys as young as five repeat sexist talking points and behaviours picked up online, with their female classmates, and often the teachers themselves, left to absorb the impact.
Still, the manosphere may be the monster, but men aren’t. Contrary to red pill mythology, humans aren’t locked into ‘ancient’ roles (which aren’t even that ancient) or incapable of change. The same goes for the socio-economic systems we live within. And to face, and one day (hopefully) slay, this monster, we need to address it all.
Notice how she completely goes off about how inherently toxic behavioral norms exhibited by men via the patriarchy are, then suddenly abandons her analogy of likening the "monster" to the manosphere by insisting that the main issue is rooted in a gender instead. This contrived article might as well had never existed.
