When the hardship is both unfair and out of control, such as being condemned to live with a big social penalty until your dying breath because of the unfortunate looks you were born with and can't change, it actually makes you weaker.
More distrustful, more prone to depression and anger, more prone to seeing the world in terms of injustice and problems to overcome, in other words, more prone to negative emotions. I include the narcissistic fantasies of revenge and social climbing displayed in this post as negative emotions. Pride and vengeance are not wise councilors in general. Patience and humility usually work better.
Coping by thinking that being born with a disorder or a disability makes people stronger is patently false. This cope is hardly used anymore in the medical or social sector.
The strongest people are not those with a permanent chip on their shoulder and a desire to "prove themselves" (this is actually neuroticism) but happy, normal people with lots of friends and romantic success.
The guy who wrote the cope post I referred to above will be on SSRIs in less than two years. (I know it because I used to have the same mindset as a teenager. Thinking that getting prestigious diplomas would solve everything in my life).
