So this is a complex and interdisciplinary topic and I will do my best to present it in a coherent way. Hope you will enjoy it!

I think anyone who is old enough (at least 30) can remember that when we were children the depiction of the future, i.e. in movies, was of a happy, free, healthy, secured world. Diseases will be cured with a push of a button, there will be no wars, transport will take us to every point on the planet and far beyond. Some countries even promised communism/socialism or any other form of utopia. But the general perception of the future was uniform - the future will be better than our present, and far better than our past.

What do we have now?!

Movies like Mad Max, Terminator, Blade Runner, The Hunger Games, and others depict a grim depressive future. Harry Potter presents us with a Caste-based society. In Mad Max, the planet is destroyed and humanity is full of degenerates. The Terminator sows in us the fear of machines and computers. In Blade Runner, a monstrous corporation controls literally everything. And in The Hunger Games (greeting to ER’s daddy) the future social order is feudal and human sacrifice is legal.

What has happened to the depiction of the future? Why has humanity decided to dream horrors instead of happiness?
The short answer: Because the future is dangerous for the elite and hence the elite decided that it would be better to simply cancel it.

Planes fly slower, markets are being monopolized, exploration of space halted, humanity is being paralyzed by a flu pandemic, and "entrepreneurs" like Musk live from taxpayers' money handed to them by the government producing cool videos. These are all signs that technological, medical and political progress is stagnating. Electric cars? They were invented decades ago. Holograms? Invented in 1962 by Yuri Denisyuk in the Soviet Union. Most prospective technologies are being canceled and their development is outsourced to opportunists like Elon Musk who parasite on tax money.

Yet one industry has had huge real progress - everything related to surveillance and control. Smartphones and social media made a profound leap forward in their ability to control, learn, supervise, predict human behavior and burn time. And it is no coincidence that this particular industry had progressed. The mob needs no education, no medicine, no education, no clean air, no efficient and democratic government. It just has to be busy and controlled.

Therefore, a subversion of the concept of progress has been done. In the past progress implied cured disease, interstellar travel, clean and safe planet. Now progress implies SJWs, over 9000 genders, degeneracy and fierce consumption of useless shit mostly related to surveillance - everything with a prefix “smart” like smartphones.

An additional inch in the screen of a smartphone is presented as an UNPRECEDENTED scientific and engineering breakthrough! Consume-Consume-Consume!

Herds of human cattle are rushing to the nearest AppleStore to be the first to bind itself with electronic fetters. Such consumption is advertised as "cool" and being "progressive". And serves two goals. First, maintenance of the economy with its high level of consumption, exploitation through labor (needed for consumption) and profits for the capitalists. Second, control of the human masses that due to availability of knowledge might get out of control, see who are the masters of the planet and take back their own future. As far as I understand, the elite is more concerned with the second than the first. Awakened masses are deadly for the masters. They will rather tolerate losses than a revolution.

Progress has been hijacked and the future was stolen.

Why is it so?
According to Mark Fisher neoliberalism is to be blamed. It subverted the underlying forces of capitalism and paralyzed it. Neoliberalism demands fast solutions, fast profits, fast results. Its planning horizon is short-term. Live-buy-consume-die because tomorrow we will be dead. There is no future.

The cultural implications are that we are no longer able to imagine a better future, a better world, or real progress. Under “progress” normies think about more consumption, more TV shows, more genders, more unless meaningless crap and a tyrannical government that must be blindly obeyed. No dreams, no independent thought, and no ability to conceive a better world. A state of nihilism and no intellectual ability to overcome it.

This is why it was crucial to present to us the most horrible possible version of a future in movies and books - to make us want it and perceive it as the inevitable future, the natural progression of things, and to make us love the fundamental injustice and love our servitude.

Now the elite is able to form our dreams and cravings. They literally deprived us of the ability to conceive a better world. That is fucking cruel. Don't let them do it. Dream boyos, DREAM!

You make some really good threads

there's nothing to look forward to

Sounds a bit like you're describing the fall of the American dream, which would also affect all westernised countries due to American cultural dominance. With that and the dissolution of the USSR, the only somehow credible vision of revolutionising the future could be the Chinese dream as a rival superpower spending massively on R&D and infrastructure without an entirely corporation-owned government.

Cope, there was never any future to begin with :feelsLSD:
But seriously? Everything costs way too much nowadays, idiots run the show(nations, mosques, whatever else), and the economy is flushed down the toilet(especially now with corona chan). Those are some of the reasons why.

Science fiction took a pessimistic turn with the fear of a nuclear war and concerns about the environment.

It's as simple as that, IMHO.

Besides, catastrophism makes more dramatic stories.

The views on the future were naive. They neglected to think about human selfishness and how it would impact a positive sum world where everyone wanted to be on top.

Good topic. There undoubtably is a stark contrast between movies from the 80's/90's and today.

Are you sure that the same elite who cancelled the 'happy future' weren't the same one who showed us that possibility to begin with?

i day dream too sometimes

The future is so dark i gotta bring torches!

Yes. It might be so that we are controlled by the same elite all the time. I just pointed at the change.

My personal experience with the "past" relays on the depiction of the future as it was presented in the USSR. I was born in the early 90's and grow up in Eastern Europe amid the ruins of the USSR. I saw the debris of the future that was promised to the Soviet people. It was an over-idealistic indeed.

Yet I know that during the 60s American kids dreamed of being astronauts, doctors, engineers - what are they dreaming to be now? Same in the former USSR I guess.
The views on the future were naive. They neglected to think about human selfishness and how it would impact a positive sum world where everyone wanted to be on top.
Yes. But they were beautiful and they inspired people to dream of better possibilities or at least be aware that there are such things as a "future" and not merely a continuous present. Now people lost they able to understand that there is such a thing as the future. They gave up on ambitions and even the horizon of future planning is shortened.
This state of mind of "living in the now" is animalistic in nature.

Yes it is closely tied with the fall of the USSR and the fact that America is no longer obliged to compete for the future with another superpower. In fact, it has compete with China, but it doesn't realize it has to. America is drunk and thinks it is the only unchallengeable superpower which might no be the case in 20-30 years.
American lost its perception of the future while Chain has a very clear perception of the future (Belt and Road initiative, building artificial island for military purposes, high investment, high exports). The Chinese want to take the future while the Americans gave up. WAKE UP AMERICA.
