Most Muslim nations, women never wore full burkas until after the Soviet Union collapsed, there were large socialist student groups that followed more secular values, and the mullahs never had the same political power as they do now. If the Muslim world had their own cultural revolution, there would never be the perception that we are a backwards and savage people.
