In my experience, knowing that it was over was accompanied by a state of other worldly calmness and clarity. It was as if the part of my spirit that desired intimacy was obliterated out of existence.

It was a "scales falling off the eyes" moment in which everything started to make sense.

I guess It's better to know the battle is lost and retreat than to keep fighting a losing battle and subjecting yourself to pain.
