World War Two is one of the rare clear-cut examples of this, obviously, but it's a trend that's noticeable throughout history.
The Soviets (being fairly moderate at this point, a far cry from their Stalinist predecessors) failed their invasion of Afghanistan to the same Islamic militants who bomb train stations in the west. Though, a good argument could be made for the Soviets being the bad guys here, as Islam may well be the west's only hope at this point, however, it's far more backwards in thinking than Marxism-Leninism, which was still anti-degenerate at the time. Which brings to our attention that often, the only reason the bad guy wins is there is no good guy to be found.
Let's go back further.
Napoleon lost. I can only imagine an alt-history scenario with the House of Bonaparte ruling Europe being better than the current timeline.
Change the channel again.
The Crusades were largely a failure. Pretty much nothing good came out of them. People try to cope by saying they opened up trade to the Middle East, but that's a lie. Italians and Greeks had been going there by boat for centuries. In fact, the First Crusade would've been a complete wash without Italian and Greek boats.

The Roman Empire collapsed. Now, true, the Romans were degenerate as fuck at this point, which is partly why they collapsed (one of many many contributing factors), but had it not collapsed, it could've reformed.
Go back further.
Humans evolved into self-aware beings instead of being hunted to extinction by megafauna. This one is self-explanatory.
