A small literature demonstrates that names are economically relevant. However, this is the first paper to examine the relationship between surname initial rank and male life outcomes, including human capital investments and labor market experiences. Surnames with initials farther from the beginning of the alphabet were associated with less distinction and satisfaction in high school, lower educational attainment, more military service and less attractive first jobs.

I remember learning the surname thing from a VSauce video 8 years ago. I didn't understand it then but I do now. Name-moggers are forced to do things first more often on average since alphabetical ordering is used everywhere. They have to overcome greater fear and be more inventive as they have less peer example to work off of. Everyone pays immense attention to the first handful of student presentations while barely anyone gives a shit about the last ones. This will obviously bolster the confidence of name-moggers and have an opposite effect for others.
