In an October 2015 study of college students about revealing sexual orientation or virginity, they discovered that both straight men and women and gay men and women were uncomfortable with the idea of revealing oneself to others as a virgin. Although straight women did not think coming out as a virgin was more uncomfortable to do than coming out as lesbian, they found both much less comfortable than coming out as straight. Straight men, gay men and gay women all felt less comfortable coming out as a virgin than coming out as straight or even gay. Men and women both were less comfortable to come out as a virgin than as gay when it came to any kind of target audience (i.e.: who they’re talking to) except romantic partners. Despite that, men and women both were still less comfortable to come out as a virgin to a romantic partner than to come out as straight to one. Gay people, however, were less comfortable to come out as a virgin to a romantic partner than to even come out as gay or even straight to a romantic partner. In fact, gay people were less comfortable to come out as a virgin than they were to come out as even gay to every other type of target audience, even PARENTS and COUNSELORS, Counselors, in fact, were someone gay people were quite comfortable to come out as gay, too, which is remarkable.
what's also noteworthy is how we all hear from the media about parents disowning gay sons and daughters and how gay people were afraid to come out of the closet to parents. this is remarkable.
This just shows you how much more virginity is stigmatized than being gay. Yeah homophobia has worse QUALITY because we won't be victims of hate crime or violence, but virgin shaming has worse QUANTITY as in there's more people who stigmatize virgins than who stigmatize gays. In fact, if you virgin shame people will either tolerate it at worst or just think you're a bit of a jerk and move on instantly at best, but if you're a homophobe, people will hate and ostracize you. Even saying you oppose gay marriage is enough to get hated/ostracized. The percentage of people who virgin shame is higher than the percentage who are homophobes, and most americans support gay marriage, so being a virgin is more stigmatized than being gay. it's the new coming out of the closet. It's safer coming out as gay than coming out as a virgin. A virgin is way more likely to face ridicule and gets ridiculed by a larger number of people. If a homophobe is hated, people will defend them, but a virgin? people won't defend them. we even have campaigns against slut shaming but none against virgin shaming, and you will be crucified many times these days for slut shaming, including for slut shaming a chick who fucked 100 strangers. Only 12 gay people responded, and it's a minuscule sample size, but still noteworthy, they should replicate this study for further information.
