And a good number of them get sympathetic backstories or motives. Just look at how in ASOIAF/Gam of Thrones, the almost universally good looking Lannisters are treated compared to the explicitly ugly Ramsay and the almost always ugly Freys.

This. This is true for every show btw, and the thing is when a villian has a tragic backstory (which is often the case), his anger and hatred of society/other people/etc os portrayed as unjust and mistaken; if the hero has this anger, its always justified
