Most likely paid workers and skilled artisans. As far as I heard pyramid being build by slaves is a myth, as they were regarded as sacred places that can't be build by filthy slaves hands. Ancient Egyptians most likely resembled todays Copts, who are descendants of ancient Egyptians. Also most Egyptain slave were probably niggers as there are hieroglyphs of pharaons waging war on Nubians.
Egypt was a massive slave empire so probably the massive amounts of slaves they had. The actual Egyptians probably handled the logistics and designed of it but most of the work was done by who ever they had enslaved at the time.
