Some guy got mad at me for asking his ethnicity

I was at therapy and then this guy in the waiting room had red hair so I asked him if he was Irish or Scottish or Celtic and then asked him if he was from the UK and he said he was from America not the UK and then my therapist told me that he was really offended by the question and didnt like it.

It's kinda weird to ask that out of the blue, but it's not an offensive question at all. I'd be happy and proud to answer any questions about my ethnicity/ancestry because I'm not ashamed of it.

Why would you attempt to talk to a stranger in the first place for seemingly no reason? Not talking to strangers unnecessarily prevents situations like this from happening.
