The word Gospel is from middle English from the word goodspell meaning good news which was translated from the Greek word euangelion which means the same thing.
So what in this context is the good news, it is that Jesus Christ died for our sins and reconciled us back to God and saved us from an eternity of separation from God.
Here is Corinthians 15:3-4 (ESV) explaining this.
3 "For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures."
So why is this necessary? If we read Genesis 3 we see that mankind was created in paradise but disobeyed god and was expelled from the Garden of Eden and death and separation from God came to man. The next rebellion is found in Genesis 6 where angels mated with human women and man became very wicked was was destroyed in a flood.
The third rebellion is found in Genesis in chapter 11 where man constructed the Tower of Babel as a surrogate for God in place of worshipping him and as a result God disinherited the Nations. Accept Abraham found favor with God and God made a covenant with Abraham. So without going through the whole Old Testament right now I will just say God promised Abrahams descendants a Messiah which means anointed King to be a savior of the world. Here is Isaiah 53:4-5
"Surely he has borne our griefs
and carried our sorrows;
yet we esteemed him stricken,
smitten by God, and afflicted.
5 But he was pierced for our transgressions;
he was crushed for our iniquities".
If we read Matthew 27:27-50 we see the account of the death of Jesus of Nazareth on the cross or execution stake. and lets also look at the letter to the Colossians 1:21-22 (ESV) This explains what the death of Jesus accomplished.
21 "And you, who once were alienated and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds, 22 he has now reconciled in his body of flesh by his death, in order to present you holy and blameless and above reproach before him".
So what does this mean for us personally you might ask?
1. One must come to terms with the fact that we are sinners and are alienated from God and that we need a savior or face eternal punishment.
2. We cannot save ourselves and that Jesus is the only salvation.
3. We must believe that Jesus died and rose from the dead and ascended to Heaven. Here is Romans 10:9 (ESV)
"If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved."
In the following post I will include a prayer for salvation.
