Back in the middle ages there were all these craftsmen manufacturing workshops that were part of peoples houses basically. They made all sorts of things by hand like furniture. The advent of mass industry moved that manufacturing to factories. And factory towns were created. And then over time as the machinery increased in efficiency faster than the market for the products grew, eventually the manufacturing jobs started going down in down in number too. Many factories closed as the output of each factory grew not as many were needed anymore, then the factory towns where the factory shut down went to shit.

With Amazon, Walmart, Uber & co. there is no way small merchant shops could compete. Its cheaper and easier just to order from Amazon. Add in insanely greedy landlords for rent and sky high taxes on small businesses and small merchants just close up shop and do something else. The Rentier Landlords are actually raising rents into this and desperate city governments raising taxes.

The mega corporations also have political power - something very important in our age of big government. If you look at the politicians, their wives and family they are mainly all lawyers. Who do you think pays the $750 an hour billing fees to those law firms. Its the mega corporations. And the corporations can decide to switch law firms if they aren't getting what they want from the politicians or cut down on their legal work. When the corporations say jump, you have middle aged white politicians jumping for everything they are worth, regardless of party.

Good. Companies achieve technological progress.
