I want to leave my current job. I have worked as a production analyst at a paper products company for the past five years and I need something with better pay as well as the fact that I am tired of my workplace for various reasons.

There is a position that I found which is that of an office worker in an administrative wing of a security company which has very good pay, and it is a desk job in which I would be overseeing the operations of the company building. I would basically be an office worker similar to what I am doing now, except that I would be required to open-carry a pistol on the grounds.

The latter is a potential sticking point. I have psychiatric disorder that I take medication for in the past and I have spent three days in a mental hospital when I was fifteen. I am 42 now. I know that in my state, one of the questions that you are asked when getting a permit to carry is "have you ever been institutionalized" as well as when you purchase a pistol due to "red flag" laws.

Would my mental health history still bar me from purchasing and carrying a firearm? If so, is there anyway I can get permission from my state to do so?

My dream job is to be security guard, or possibly even a night guard.

I was going to do the transport officer tafe course, but they expect you to go full time on a contract - which I couldn't do as I am in uni

So here is what I found out...

In my state, unless you were literally court-ordered to go into a mental hospital, it will not show up when attempting to purchase a firearm. However, during the 30-day background check when applying to the state for a permit to carry, any incidents involving police will show up. Before I ended up in a mental hospital for three days, the police that arrived strongly suggested that I go to a mental health center with the subtext that I would be forced to go if I refused but I was not formally-arrested or forced by a judge to go but the fact that law enforcement was called might be taken into account when applying for a permit to carry.

I have applied on Monday. Now it is a matter of waiting to see what happens.

Everyday I'm loosing hope in "it gets better"

After awhile you stop caring as much so it gets better in the sense of your "angst" lessening.

< 18, Kid legal stuff usually stays kid stuff. Hidden. Locked files...

"Been institutionalized" basically means that the gov put you in there. (Via a court order...)

Say "no" and don't elaborate further if it was self chosen...

Voluntary (self sought) psychological treatment is mostly treated like medical care.

Ofc, it depends on what the issue was. Seeing demons? Hearing voices telling you to kill? Etc...

Chances are you have been ok to own guns since you turned 21 and just didn't know it.

Some real criminals (felons) have been able to get back gun and voting rights from the (various) state(s), but its very rare.
