Virtue signalling is known as competitive altruistic behaviour. It affects everyone kids start to virtue signal at the age of 8. They do it mostly to get along with their peers.
However virtue signalling is also common in mating context. In this research they pointed that the disease affects men more than women. Quite significantly by the way. Even worst males virtue signallers signal more actively than women.
Researchers attribute this to role model of a provider. By sending imaginary rice to starving children in Africa men signal their ability to provide resources. The interesting part is that there's not much difference between virtue signalling and betabuxxing in mating context. With the exception that betabuxxing is providing resources to food while virtue signalling is providing resources to others. However the desired goal is the same and actions are almost the same.
