PONTIAC, MI -- Oxford High School shooter Ethan Crumbley’s private journal laid out his murderous plan, including to shoot pretty girls in the back of their heads. “The first victim has to be a pretty girl with a future so she can suffer just like me,” he wrote in a 22-page journal discovered on the floor of the boys’ bathroom following the shooting. The first of his first four classmates he killed on Nov. 30, 2021 was 14-year-old Hana St. Juliana, described by a teacher at her funeral as a “beautiful flower.” The others slain teens were Madisyn Baldwin, 17; Tate Myre, 16; and Justin Shilling, 17. Crumbley, a 15-year-old sophomore at Oxford High School at the time of the shooting, now 17, wore an orange jail uniform with dark brown hair parted to the right side of his forehead at the hearing, held at the Oakland County Circuit Court. He stared through dark-rimmed glasses at fat binders filled with legal documents atop the defense table and Oakland County Sheriff’s Office Detective Lt. Tim Willis recited his words. “I just saw a group of girls sitting down in the hallway,” Crumbley wrote, according to Willis’s testimony. “If I had my pistol on me, then I would not have hesitated to blow both of their brains out ... “I hope that every parent of kids I gratefully murdered will be so sad that they kill themselves, and I want all of America to see the darkness in me.” Crumbley is undergoing a Miller hearing to determine if he will be sentenced to die in prison. It’s a special hearing required for all juveniles facing a mandatory life sentence, meant to give special consideration to the impact of their age and other factors. The hearing began at 9 a.m. Thursday, July 27, and is expected to run through Friday with the possibility of a third date in August, should more time be required. The cryptic, journaled words indicate Crumbley wanted to commit the largest school shooting in Michigan history. Since school shootings in Michigan are rare, “that means I will cause the largest shooting ever in the state,” Willis read from the journal. “I am not going to kill myself. I will surrender to police. I wish to hear the screams of the children as I shoot them.” Crumbley’s words show he expected to spend his life in prison. "I will continue shooting people until police reach the building,” Crumbley wrote in the journal. “I will then surrender to them and plead guilty to life in prison.” More in article.
