Their CEO, CSO, and PR team are all stupid as shit
They exiled a predator catcher from their platform and then release a statement on their blog saying that "vigilantism" is prohibited (basically saying they want to protect child predators on their platform).
Right after that, they lose $12bn in market value, negative media attention, and lawsuits. I dont know why they would do something so retarded, it's like they're shooting themselves in the foot for no reason.
Now just a few days ago, Roblox announced age verification requirements for all users through pictures of yourself (that'll be scanned by AI age estimation) or government identification.
If you don't verify your age, then you can't chat.
If you do verify, then you'll be placed in a age group where you can only communicate with users close to your age bracket.
You can already see how flawed this system is.
Not only will this ruin so much games, but it will also make it much more dangerous for minors.
Just imagine a predator figuring out the age of other users based off their account's age bracket. Just imagine a predator tricking the AI age estimation and being put into a 9-12 age bracket. You can already see where this is going.
It's quite clear that this isn't for safety, but to please investors and braindead Facebook moms who'll scroll down a news post and think everything is okay without understanding what's going on in depth.
Instead of using this ineffective AI slop, they could just revamp their moderation tactics. Roblox's current moderation system consists of a shitty AI that processes uploaded content and moderators who are probably outsourced from countries like India. Instead of limiting their moderation to processing reports or uploaded content, they could invest in specialized teams that go after predators via decoys and things of that nature. There are many responsible adults who are willing moderate the platform as a volunteer, so money would hardly be an issue.
