I've noticed a lot of disdain toward Asian female and White couples online, often coming from Asian men. Personally, I am an Asian man myself, but I don't feel strongly about the politics surrounding interracial couples. I don't see myself competing with White men over this.
One of the biggest challenges Asian men face is being demasculinized by the media. They are often portrayed as nerdy, skinny, and wimpy, which reinforces the stereotype that they are not masculine. As a result, this has negatively impacted their chances of dating.
I remember seeing an OkCupid report from 2014 that stated Asian men were among the least popular males in the dating market.
First, as an Asian male, I’m not as affected by this stereotype because I:
- Hit the gym 5-6 times a week with an emphasis on bulking up. I’m not trying to get shredded or look skinny-muscular; instead, I’m focused on increasing my muscle mass, particularly in my shoulders, arms, and lats.
- I’m actively fighting the Asian model minority stereotype by hitting the gym with the goal of bulking up and becoming extremely athletic, essentially, aiming to look less nerdy.
I’ve been complimented on my arms before, so I’m definitely making significant progress. When I look in the mirror, I can see that I’ve gotten much bigger. I am seeing a slight bicep insertion!
After going to the gym almost every day, I can confidently say that I have more muscle and am stronger than many White males. I don't feel weaker than them, which is why I don't feel significantly affected by the model minority stereotype.
To change my view, convince my why I should care about the interracial politics in the West as an Asian male since I work out and am stronger than most of the Whites I've encountered.
