If you all have read my previous posts on this sub (or if you haven’t) I’m East Asian and indigenous American. Throughout my whole life, growing up in America even in a neighborhood that’s mainly POC, the standard was always white adjacent regardless of race or even white as a whole.
i was bullied by everyone, regardless of race, even my own family members for my flat face, masculine features (small Monolid eyes, straight large nose, wide shoulders, jaw etc), and tan skin. Growing up in the 00s/10s there was ZERO representation or at least positive representation (I’m looking at you Tila Tequila) of WOC. I had zero people to look up to, and I refused to watch Asian media like kdramas because I was so ashamed of my background and the feature that came with it.
Fast forward to the 2020s, it seems we’ve advanced as a society and we see beautiful people of all colors, shapes and sizes….or so I thought.
Even the most beautiful of WOC such as Anok Yai, Jang Wonyoung, are simply called ‘ugly‘ because the very features that make them unique to their own backgrounds are considered ‘inferior‘ as compared to the most beautiful or average white woman.
It’s pure ropeful, I’m not even the one being talked about and it still deeply hurts. It makes me realize that even if I become the ‘most beautiful’ overnight, the features that distinguish me and mark my background, will make me ugly as compared to a White woman. I could never win
