If you look at countries only 10% of the human footprint is urban areas where people live. 90% of the human footprint is farming. People think its all cities because they live in cities and that is all they see. But when you zoom out on maps you can clearly see that the area of cities and towns is small.

Since at least 1900 the crop yields per acre have been rising at ~3% a year, thanks to advancing science and technology. That is continuing today. But today the population growth is about 1%. So America has less farmland under cultivation today than in the year 1900. Soys and cuckservatives all believe we are running out of farmland. But that is just not true. Trust me poor people wouldn't be morbidly obese if we were running out of farmland. This leads to a remarkable reality, we no longer need 2% of the farmland every year. And in America since there is 50 states, so we no longer need an entire state's worth of farmland each year.

As you can imagine countries are fighting insanely hard against advances in crop sciences and technology. Because the farmers have so much political power and they know what that will mean to their businesses. Most countries are paying farmers to grow food and then burning the food in one way or another. Countries are also paying farmers to leave the land as farmland, but to not grow crops.

That is where the story about the farmer who was not growing alfalfa on his farmland, was earning more net income from subsidies to not grow alfalfa than farmers growing alfalfa on their land. Then that enterprising farmer he bought up alfalfa farms to not grow alfalfa on them and his business kept growing.

Another idea being fought tooth and nail is why not just pay farmers to let their lands go back to nature.
