That my major opinions about it didn't change at all. Did they have to? I don't know, I just state the fact.
The good things: characters, action scenes, main plot, writing, for the most part. Not much else to say.
The bad things (don't outweight the good things):
1. There's always someone about to tear up on the screen. Multiple characters to tear up. Multiple times the same character to tear up, in the same episode. Seemed legit at first but got old pretty fast. As a kid I wasn't that stupid to fail to realize the significance of the moment, I didn't need more of visual stimulation.
2. Farting and burping jokes. Very cheap, never funny. Overall jokes can be hit and miss at times, from silly and touching to stupid and eye-rolling.
3. The Appa lost episode. Plain unbearable to watch save for a few fragments that show other characters from Appa's POV. Just replace it with another "Azula chases Avatar" or "Zuko is so confused and undecisive" episode for all I care.
4. Girl power episodes are annoying.
A few strong personal opinions I had as a kid that didn't change:
1. Iroh is a calculating prick who sabotaged Zuko, manipulated him and implanted his own ideas of how things should be done. Like seriously, each time this bastard goes on about "WHO is prince Zuko" and "what does HE want" and how it's time to "choose his destiny and to choose light" etc etc. I think it's bullshit and I didn't get this as a kid. Iroh just took advantage of him.
2. Zuko siding with the avatar had as much sense as not siding with him, it was elective. And in my view, Zuko's "true" destiny was to look for an ultimate revenge and get slain at Azula's hand in the end, like a troubled person he always had been. Arguably this was his whole identity that made him special, not some lofty avatar blabber to make wrong things right again. So Iroh would have to teach the avatar the fire element and then inherit the fire kingdom. Him being heirless would of course have grave implications, but it would be an interesting way to kick off the next entry. I admit there's a lot of loose ends to tie up, I didn't think it through.
3. They did Toph dirty in the last episodes. I mean the time when she half-jokingly asked Katara if she had a secret thing with Haru. Or when she told Zuko her life story but he just shut her down. I know it was meant as a joke, but was uncalled for. Also I still think that Suki was a fifth wheel and shouldn't have got the spotlight. And she stealed Sokka from Toph, whatever. Ignore the fact that I'm pissed off by a 20 years old kids' cartoon, and I'm over 30 yo, whatever that tell you.
Best characters are Zuko and Azula, still.
@Overrrr thoughts?
(I know it's not an "anime" anime, Just rename the damn subforum already)
