"According to Freud, most women were capable of becoming prostitutes and this was particularly true of 'the average uncultivated female.'" — S. L. Gilman
I’ve anonymously and hypothetically asked two (low income/unemployed) women so far in DMs and both gave some kind of number. But I believe the number they provide is inevitably much higher than their actual number for several reasons:
This suggests, at the very minimum, curiosity about what I’d be willing to offer, as “I’m not for sale” is felt to be much more likely to deter an offer than giving me some kind of price to work with. More likely it’s a not-so-veiled admission that there is a price.
“This is a month’s rent, for one night”, “It’s just between us”, “Why do it for free?”, “I don’t want an escort, I want you.” etc.

- Personal pride/ego (“I’m not easy or cheap!”)
- Privacy/status fears (“What if this private conversation were leaked?”)
- Negotiation 101 (“I go high, you go low, we meet in the middle”, “Maybe he accepts the high price”)
- Little to no knowledge of the market price of sex work, commonly leading to overestimation
- Doubt of your seriousness ("Will he actually follow through or is he testing me/wasting my time?")
- Physical safety/comfort concerns (“Is this guy clean/honest/non-violent?”)
