The scandalous little secret of those who hate us, obsess over our instances of gallows-humor, write anguished articles about us and produce videos dedicated to our vilification is that they know we're no actual threat. They wouldn't insult us in the way they do, laugh at our pain and denigrate the authenticity of our wounds, if they really believed we were dangerous. No one taunts a rabid dog unless he's lunatic or knows, all too well, the animal's fangs have already been yanked from its skull and the thing he's antagonizing is no more harmful than a pathetic, malformed puppy.
Yet, we are dangerous in a sense and they want us silenced. Why should that be? Well, there are myriad reasons but perhaps the most embarrassing is that our critics are very weak. Their bodies and faces may be lovely but their spirits are emaciated and cowardly. They want to enjoy all the privileges Nature bestowed upon them without having to pay the tiniest price.
The loved don't want to acknowledge that they enjoy what is good while there are others who don't. They are every glutton who banishes each and every beggar from his court because he doesn't want to feel so much the tiniest twinge of guilt while he gorges himself. To meditate upon the very hard reality that there are those who will go down to the dead never having seen so much as a woman's smile while he embraces his beloved is not an easy thing for any man to do. This is the price he is obligated to pay in return for his good fortune, the tiny drop of blood he's expected to shed in order to sign the pact Nature has pressed into his hands. And, parody of a man that he is, or woman that she is, is reluctant to make even that minute sacrifice. He won't surrender so much as a tear. He isn't strong enough to rejoice while others suffer.
So the coward needs to silence the cries of those who mourn while he laughs. He needs to flood his bedchamber with light lest the palest shadow creep into it, infecting his dreams and rendering them nightmares.
When all is said and done, I don't want the government to provide me some state-sponsored mate. I don't want a wife bound to my side by enforced monogamy. I have no desire for the scientists to manufacture some sophisticated doll capable of showing a dull facsimile of the affection that actual human beings receive in earnest. I don't want sex slaves or anything other absurd thing of that sort.
My demand is far less grand, or at least it should be. I merely want our critics to confess that they are loved and we are not simply because Nature blessed them and cursed us. I want them to concede that there are men who will never enjoy the embrace of a women while they do because there are men too repulsive for any woman to love. No excuses, no platitudes, no homilies about personality or inner beauty. No tattered myth about there being someone for everyone. Instead, I merely expect a moment of honesty. Just a quick pin-prick and bead of crimson. Nature has wronged us and benefited them and I clamor not for a lover but for an admission that my ugliness is the reason I'll do down to the dead without one.
So very little to demand but infinitely more than they have the strength to offer up.
This is the true reason why even the gentlest among us are regarded as dangerous devils and, as such, must be exorcised and driven down into the silent, lonely places where the damned belong.
