Interesting. Is there another, third group falling in antisocial personality disorder, which cannot be described as psychopathic or sociopathic?First and foremost, sociopathy is not equal to psychopathy. It's true that sociopathy is commonly called secondary psychopathy, although it's not equal to "real psychopathy," which describes primary psychopathy specifically. It's like calling a tomato a vegetable even though it's technically a fruit.
I'll list some differences:
Sociopathy has some epigenetic basis in that it is caused by genes predisposing someone to be antisocial, but it also has an environmental basis as well, which can be trauma like being bullied in school or being raped. Psychopathy, on the other hand, is fully genetic, meaning that you are being born as a psychopath.
Psychopaths have a smaller amygdala and lack normal connections in the ventromedial prefrontal cortex. They are unable to feel emotional empathy or anxiety. They can't even bond with other people emotionally due to a lack of oxytocins; hence, psychopaths don't even trully love their own children. Furthermore, they feel absolutely zero remorse, and their self-esteem is extremely high. Sociopaths have normal brain structures and do feel emotional empathy, but it's reduced due to trauma response. Sociopaths, contrary to psychopaths, feel anxiety and often experience it to a greater extent. They are able to feel remorse for their actions and can have low self-esteem, which sometimes drives them to commit crimes.
Psychopaths are cold and commit crimes due to self-interest, not emotional outbursts like sociopaths (e.g. Elliot Rodger). They feel no fear when arrested due to their inability to experience anxiety, whereas sociopaths in such cases can even resort to emotion-driven acts like suicide.
Technically, both sociopaths and psychopaths fall under the antisocial personality disorder diagnosis, but the differences are quite significant. A stereotypical incel mass shooter is a sociopath driven by trauma and low self-esteem, whereas a dark triad chad is more of a primary psychopath who commits crimes due to self-interest.
Psychopathic traits correlate with success in positions of power, in which one experiences immense stress and pressure and has to be unaffected by emotional manipulations or negative feedback; hence, many politicians, surgeons, and police officers are borderline psychopaths. Sociopathic traits aren't that helpful in life because, essentially, you are a slave to emotions and trauma responses.
Technically, the researched psychopaths have lower-than-average IQ scores, but this may be due to the fact that these studies were conducted in prisons where only stupid psychopaths with low impulse control end up, so there's a high chance that it's a selection bias.
I haven't seen this study. I read about it in the guardian article and at a few other sites.Where
Haven't heard of a third type of ASPD but maybe @Atavistic Autist may add something.Interesting. Is there another, third group falling in antisocial personality disorder, which cannot be described as psychopathic or sociopathic?
Those things aren't exclusive enough to constitute the basis of a third group. Most recognized psychopaths and sociopaths are, by default, degenerate because they don't follow acceptable social norms. When it comes to low impulse control, it characterizes sociopaths, but not necessarily psychopaths, who can be cold and calculating if they are more intelligent. For example, degenerate low impulse control serial killers seem like they are different group.
The typical researched psychopath is of lower intelligence, but as I mentioned earlier in the last paragraph, the studies were conducted on the prison population, which is why they could be affected by selection bias.If you kill someone with an axe just because of low impulse control, you don't possess intelligence of a typical psychopath and sociopath and you don't even act out of self-interest.
They arent psychopaths, it's just in their biology to bully men with low genetic valueThey are psychopaths, atleast based on how they treat me.
I'm very calm and gentle but if you did wrong to me..."IT IS OVER FOR YOU"Your avi indicates that you have violent tendencies.
Psychopaths listen to violent, edgy music? That makes sense. At least some 'study' showed it.
It would be interesting how they knew who is a psychopath.
