LDAR How do I console people?

Among my more major social weaknesses in the inability to effectively console someone who is sad. When I'm sad, I'd rather not talk about it and resolve it on my own but some people want to be comforted. It certainly would be a useful trait to have but how do you perfect it?

I wish I knew because it's rlly awkward in the moments where I feel like someone is expecting me to. But I legitimately don't know what to say.

Whenever I am socially obligated to console someone I just say "I'm sorry, I am not able to say anything that will ease your mood".
