Why sex segregated prisons and jails are bad should be painfully obvious to those who know the history of why we had to fight racial segregation in the US.
In jail, lesbians and gays, which shouldn't exist, are able to form relationships with the sex they desire. Heterosexual people are not able to do that in prison. This is a double standard against heterosexuals. In fact, there shouldn't even be the opportunity for homosexuality in prisons. The standard should be only double-bunking with one man and one woman per cell. Both inmates should be the same race. The number of female and male inmates should be th same. This would allow inmates to procreate. This would reduce recidivism because becoming a parent reduces crime. If prisons were only like this, fag rape would be abolished in prison.

The motherhood reduction, Masenkoff and Rose note, is on par with the deterrent effects of doubling police funding or the prison population.
