Any NES game. Puzzles during that era were hiding something with 0 explanation or hint. What's bizarre is that there was a puzzle that stumped me in Mario 3 more than anything I encountered in Zelda 1. Final Fantasy 1 also gets a dishonorable mention. That game is a nightmare to play without a guide. Like Zelda you have to sweep every inch of the open world to figure out what to do next. However, unlike Zelda you're constantly bombarded with random encounters.
Dragon Quest 1 did it better and was less vague. (Although I never finished it.)
Final Fantasy 1 can go fuck itself with some of the hints it gives.
Another vague and obnoxious game is Zelda 2. This is primarily due to horrible translation which leaves the hints absolutely worthless.
