People will insult a religion or idea by calling it ‘medieval’ or saying it ‘belongs to the middle ages’ as if the Medieval era was a time of amorality and barbarism. But how does this make sense when the rise of Christianity/Islam during the Middle Ages propagated public healthcare, charity towards the destitute and considerably improved women’s rights (despite people acting like foids were nothing but slaves back then)?

People evoke the medieval era because it was a time of backwardness compared to antiquity and the modern era.

That’s a myth, Medieval era pretty much wholly mogged Antiquity. Modern era is obviously better but it still came with more intense violence and atrocities (most due to technological advancements but you still have the development of intense nationalism and scientific racism)

Its probably a myth but these are what people think of for respective time period. Ancient greece is very romanticised and altho medieval sometimes is in terms of romance most people have a more bleak dirty, city focused view of it

You went from complex centralized polities to petty feudal kingdoms and sewage systems to shit in the streets. Most medieval learning relied on commentaries on ancient works that barely yielded any new ideas.

I agree medieval ages were a great thing for humanity and people who don't realize this have never read a book

G'day m'lord!

If you’re rich/high-class: antiquity era was better
If you’re an average guy: medieval era was better

The only thing good about the Medieval Times was their method of tortures .

Ancient Greece is definitely romanticised as a mystical Atlantis heaven.

True, but Western Europe was ass during Rome anyway. The only place it could go was up. And Roman infrastructure was still at least somewhat perpetuated by the Byzantines

Hmm, learning in the Islamic World/China still flourished during medieval times. And a lot of important advancements took place in different fields such as agriculture, mathematics, medicine, craftsmanship and banking.

100%

I agree.

It's a trope that goes back to the Enlightenment, as there were relatively few primary sources from the Middle Ages. People who live in the present tend to believe that they are much smarter and wiser than their predecessors, and the men of the Enlightenment were quite vain in this respect, which is why they were so hard on the image of the Middle Ages.

I wouldn't be surprised if it also had to do with anti-Catholicism.
