I watched a video that suggested saudi only become ultra conservative in recent times thanks to the mecca mosque seizure by some radicals who were against modernity. Apparently saudi was liberalising pretty hard up to that point. Bin Laden no doubt was just another byproduct of that endeavour. It must have felt like night and day transformation to people who straddled both sides of the contrast. MBS's reforms will probably lead to another terrorist catastrophe or even civil war.
