grind and reward.

killing NPCs should ad some form of boost, while regions of the game should have renewable/
random generated bosses and even story scripts.

this is what made "kanji no owari" one of the greatest games ever made.

GTA was a good game so have many different other games have been good open world games. However, open world is codeword for lazy and asset reuse. Its really easy to pad out a games time by making the player travel through empty maps just to get to the next mission. For example, elden ring would have been a much game if it was linear
