You can't really slap a single description on anime. It comes in too wide a variety. Sci-fi, fantasy, romance, slice-of-life, historical, comedy, drama, you name it. Some is total kiddie stuff (Pokemon), some is really sexually perverted (honestly, I wish I could unsee it). There's something for every mood and taste.
I never knew how many of the cartoons I watched as a kid were anime (we didn't even have that term, yet). Astro Boy, Speed Racer, Kimba The White Lion, 8th Man, Star Blazers. Eventually, I heard the term "Japanimation," used. Don't know when the switch happened.
At the time my Dad passed away, I fell into a depression that watching regular TV didn't help. Then I stumbled across Sailor Moon, and I got hooked. It had the same campy sense of humor that the old Batman (with Adam West) had. But if you wanted to scratch the surface, you could find deeper meanings in it. Well, they took it off the air before the storyline could be resolved, and I went into withdrawal.
But this is what gave me the push to get out of the house and start looking for video stores that carried this stuff. This is how I first became aware of classic titles like Ranma 1/2 and Tenchi Muyo. During this time I got caught up on a lot of others that I only knew by reputation.
So for a short time, I was an otaku.
Not so much during recent times, tho. Ever since the dubbing companies went belly up (or woke). I've almost totally lost interest.
But if something I've never seen is streaming online for free, I'll give it a shot.
