What i mean is, they thought that if you just said the right words, behaved the right way and acted in a certain spectrum (which is prob the basis of religion, lets not fool oursleves for even a sec here) then and only then, things would work out for you.
When people started pressing the priests on the baselessness and cuckedness of this whole shebang, they had to figure a way out without losing their privileges and even their heads. Then the afterlife came about.
Might sound exagerated and over simplifcation, but if you strip down all the occultism and hundreds of rituals, thats what your left with. A game of rewards and punishements, firmly established and passed through generations...
