His 21 year long reign would help the empire stabilize after the disastrous Third Century Crisis. This was in large part due to the military and civil reforms he would institute. The most famous and impactful being the Tetrarchy, or the rule of four. Two emperors would would rule one side of the empire and select a subordinate to rule another. Although the system would quickly collapse after he voluntarily resigned from power, it proved to be effective when under his leadership.
Diocletian also carried out the last great persecution against the Christians, likely motivated by his junior emperor Galerius.
