Old games had very immersive menus and UIs with strong art direction.

Most UIs in games today look boring, like placeholders that were supposed to get a proper design but never did. The reason UIs lost all personality is because games became popular with normies, and publishers realized they could save time and money by stripping them down to the bare minimum. Why bother with artistic design when you can slap on a generic UI template and still sell million copies to soulless consumers who don’t care either way?

Soyrim started the trend with its clean, lifeless UI, btw.

After that, modern games jumped on the same trend. They all look the same now. Doesn’t matter if it’s a sci-fi shooter or a medieval fantasy RPG, the UI feels like a generic mobile app.

Old games, by contrast, made the UI feel like an extension of the game world, stylistically in sync with the visuals, atmosphere, and tone. Take Diablo, for example. TheUI fit the game’s dark, gothic tone perfectly. The stone textures looked like they were made in the same world you were playing in.

I think game UIs are important. They’re not just decoration. They set the tone, build immersion, and contribute to the worldbuilding.

Old UIs had it's charm and also on PC were fully movable and you didn't need to move from the gameplay as they just appeared on the screen not taking entire new loading screen that slows game down

This is something that needs to be talked about more. There used to be a lot more creativity to get you immersed, for example the map in original skyrim actually looking like a map from medival times rather than the modern map that looks like 3dcg rubber.

Modern game UI designs are an afterthought

Good example. Deus Ex UI looks like it belongs in the gritty, industrial cyberpunk game world, not like a sterile interface from a mobile banking app.

You probably meant Oblivion's map. Skyrim's looked more like a Google Earth satellite image.

Modern games UI are simple, minimalist and better.

It also reminds me of winamp ui (soul) vs spotify (soulless)

Nuclear truthpill about modern games

modern games have Hulu user interface
they also have a stupid amount of popups and tips

in the peak era of gaming, even pauses, options and menu screens were part of the game. Just look at the main menus of old call of duty zombies, or Halo 3, or games whose menus change depending on your progress in the story, or idk, something as simple as sound effects when u navigate the menu like painkiller

Damn, I completely forgot about Winamp. Glad you reminded me.

Totally agree. Enclave’s menu was pretty cool too.

I like simple UI. I just want to play not see 200 colors. I really like Valve games main menus because it has literally no design it just says play and options and shit like that in boring white text. The game should be judged off the GAME, not the UI.

Really good point, D2 is about to have the last of its organs gutted by this

Old games were an art form of both design and creativity, new games are designed by committee and to appeal to the widest audience!

Creating games will be a thing of the past soon it won't get better. Ai will create games in days with a prompt its only going to get worse its never going to get better the golden age is passed us
