The odds of nuclear war have gone up significantly. I'd still estimate it at below 2% currently, but depending on how things play out in the next few months that might be a lower bound estimate. That estimate, however, is still terribly high. As such, I would advise everyone - all of you who don't want to die anyway - to avoid coastal regions and port cities, major metropolitan cities, and obviously capital cities. If you're in North America, think about moving towards the center of the land mass in rural areas without any potential military targets. If you're in Europe, you're most likely going to be fucked, I'm sorry; there are few pockets of forests and mountains you could probably escape to and wait for nuclear winter. Maybe think about catching a boat and heading south towards northern Africa. I've already made a plan A, B, and C for this, and it's going to take me about 4-5 months to settle my affairs once I give the green light, if it comes to that.

I don't know. Those could be the true odds for all anyone knows. These things are impossible to numerically estimate with any accuracy, since there isn't exactly a rich data set of nuclear wars from which we can draw samples.

Doesn't change my analysis all that much, really. This move by Russia does increase the odds, though. In fact it reinforces my suspicion that neighboring countries west of Ukraine will be the ones to see the initial nuclear salvos, if it escalates to that.

Whatever Putin may be, he isn't a bullshitter who's known to bluff. He's a no-nonsense military intelligence man, not the aristocrat type who is more concerned about people's opinions of him and keeping up appearances. If he makes a threat and says that something is on the table, it's wise to assume that he intends to exercise that option. Giving the order for his nuclear forces to be on alert is no joke. The question now is, what conditions need to be met before he gives the executive order to his generals.

If he uses nuclear ICBMs (not strictly necessary, given the distance), like he should if he plans on making that first strike, central Europe could be a no man's land within minutes. We have to assume that the US, Russia, and China are all capable of limited intercept capabilities in the doomsday scenario (all-out nuclear exchange), which is why they don't seem to be all that perturbed by the possibility of nuclear weapons use. The superpowers aren't shitting their pants at the thought of nuclear war like they did during the cold war. That's probably because missile defence technologies were not very well developed at that point.

The entire world will be in full denial about nuclear war right up until the moment they see the twitter live stream of a mushroom cloud. That is, if satellite and internet communications aren't knocked out for days. We're past fantasy scenarios and simulations at this point. We have to be psychologically and logistically prepared as if it's a certainty.

3) Nuclear power plants lose the supply of cooling and give us the show Chernobyl failed to give.

The planet is fucking massive and has seen worse conditions. Over 95% of the world's landmass is not going to see nuclear explosions. Though, tbf, that won't matter. The radiation winds and clouds would be dispersed across continents, but you're overestimating the damage to the planet itself. There will be enough water and arable farmland free from lethal levels of radioactive pollution (there will be trace amounts present in a lot of it), even though much of the world's animal and plant life will be fucked in the short-term.
