Just be confident theory. They probably do think highly of themselves in their own minds, portraying that same self respect comes from affirmation and gratification of society which we don't get. You can still think highly of yourself despite how other people see you. Self respect and outward confidence don't go hand in hand. One is how you treat yourself, the other is how people treat you.
