I think we need to read between the lines here. It wasn't a cat and it wasn't Salvador who cut up his face - his MOTHER cut up his face.
Obviously he lied to his friend because he was too ashamed to admit it. Admitting to physical abuse is hard, especially as a male, especially with a female aggressor.
So instead you hide it with shit like "a cat" or "I'm a badass rebel who does it to be cool" because you can't bring yourself to admit "my mom claws up my face".

IMO this tranny allegation might be some poison pill falsehood to prevent us from empathizing with him. Haven't seen any strong evidence for this being why he was bullied. More likely explanation is he just had a goth/emo phase trying to find a place to belong.
