Availability bias is a cognitive bias where people judge the likelihood or frequency of an event based on how easily examples come to mind.
This is actually exploited by companies to sell shit. I think this also applies to incels.
Statistically, most crimes against women—especially sexual assault, domestic violence, and harassment—are committed by men who are sexually active and known to the victim, not by incels but people demonize incels because of the availability bias caused by media coverage and shows like Adolescence.
Examples:
- Terrorism: After watching news about a plane hijacking, people think air travel is extremely dangerous—even though it's statistically safer than driving.
- Shark attacks: After seeing a news story or movie (like Jaws) about a shark attack, people start thinking swimming in the ocean is super risky. In reality, shark attacks are extremely rare—you’re more likely to be struck by lightning but the vividness of a shark attack makes it feel more likely than it is.
