It's not 2017 anymore. "Incel" isn't some esoteric internet word, it's part of the mainstream lexicon and has been for quite some time. There's been endless media coverage and it's one of the current moral panics of the time. My coworkers use the word all the time, but obviously they don't use it in the same way we do. They basically use it as a synonym for "bad man". Some people i've heard them call "incel" were Elon Musk, Drake, and P diddy. Also if a male customer is annoying, he's an "incel". If you're not woke, you're an "incel".
Also OP is pretty young so his parents could very well be millennials. But even if they're not, even a lot of older people spend a lot of time online. His mother might spend a lot of time on facebook and that word probably comes up every time someone disagrees with a male about something, just like on reddit/twitter/tiktok.
These days, you'd probably have to go as old as 60+ to find someone who isn't familiar with the term "incel".
