If dolphins become unconscious, they suffocate. Unlike land mammals, they do not have a breathing reflex. You will notice the lack of connecting fabric between the two hemispheres; this is because they operate functionally independent of each other. A dolphin keeps its brain healthy, alternating the hemisphere it is using while the other half goes to "sleep" or at least does all the rejuvenation processes that mammals usually do while sleeping. They need twice as much brain for the same level of intelligence because they are conscious 24 hours a day, every day of their lives. A dolphin always has at least one eye open, corresponding to which side of the brain is in use.
