I agree. The UI should look like it belongs in the game world, not like some lifeless, cookie-cutter template.
I disagree with you, I think there shouldn’t even be a ui, no fixed images on screens in general. Oleds are becoming affordable and I wanna see a full picture, no overlay shapes over video

I miss old colorful & full of details aethestics. Now everything seems bland and soulless.
IMO I like a mix of both, the UIs from very old games look like hell sometimes and feel clunky and the new ones are too minimalist. For example Left 4 Dead 1 has a minimalist hud but Left 4 Dead 2 gives it style yet still keeping all the same information and not making it look clunky and hard to read, very good balance. That is what I prefer in a HUD, to have style but not too much. Oblivion does this well too, nice stylistic HUD but still gives you information and is easy to read.
