This was from AWHILE ago, but it still gets under my skin due to how petty others were.
So this was when I was promoted to E-4, Specialist, in the Army. This was the highest rank I would get there; perhaps if things turned out differently I would have been motivated to stay in or re-enlist, but this was one of the factors/ reasons I decided against it. That's a long story.
I went in front of Captain Longfellow, and maybe out of a lapse of judgment or because my right hand was occupied, I saluted with my left hand. No big deal, right? Especially if you never were in, it's something you wouldn't give a shit about.
However, what might be a source of good-natured ribbing for others became a source for constant ridicule for me, whenever others wanted a reason to attack me. There was no mistaking it; even back then, with below-average social skills, I could tell the difference between people just messing with me, and being malicious.
Now if I were to salute any superior officer in the army, I'd probably do so with just one finger. And you can guess which one. Some of you may have heard that joining the military would be a great way to build your social group and find friends for life. Well... maybe not. I can't guarantee either way. I do have some fun memories, but as I said earlier it wasn't enough to make me reenlist or apply for OCS.
I eventually just dropped off my ACUs at goodwill without a second thought.
