The vast majority of people who join the military don't join out of "muh patriotism", they join because they can't afford to go to college and have no career prospects, and the military offers them 3 meals a day, a bed, and a salary. It's well documented that military personnel disproportionately come from economically depressed parts of the country, and recruiters target these areas. That said, I would advise against joining the military as the lack of freedom, long working hours, combined with the fact that people who outrank you treat you like dog shit and get away with it, makes it not worth it.

Of course, a lot of people in the military will tell you they joined because they wanted to defend their country or some other altruistic reason, but most of the time that's just virtue signaling.
